GPA Wins DOE American-Made Digitizing Utilities Phase 1 Prize
On Thursday, March 9, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electricity (OE) announced a team including Grid Protection Alliance (GPA) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as one of nine Phase 1 winners of the American-Made Digitizing Utilities Prize! Phase 1 of the Digitizing Utilities Prize invited developers to solve predetermined utility challenges. Our team worked directly with a utility to propose software solutions that improve how the energy industry manages, stores, and processes data.
The team will attempt to develop data analytics functions using PMU and point-on-wave data for asset diagnostics and performance evaluation system. These methods are applicable to synchronous generators and inverter-based resources such as wind turbines and solar PV systems. Of interest are oscillations due to equipment malfunctions as well as frequency and voltage regulation performance of controlled equipment.
Digitizing Utilities Prize judges selected three teams from each track - nine in total - to award from Phase 1 and advance to Phase 2 of the competition. The Digitizing Utilities Prize is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity and directed and administered by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
